I bought this filter thinking that it was made by Holmes, it is not. This was not a problem though as I have had filters from this other company before. The company is BestAir (aka Endust). The material around the filter is not the usual black but silver looking and I think it is made of metal and very strong. It is also coated with an antibacterial treatment. I would definately order this filter again.

I have a now discontinued Sunbeam SCM1702. The sunbeam wick humidifiers are apparently made by Holmes with a few minor cosmetic differences.
These filters are very effective and last longer than the older ones that they replace. But they cost more and like the older ones letting them run dry significantly shortens their life. These type humidifiers are much more effective than the older ones like the Sears that are 6x the size. But all the ones I have seen are relatively noisy. Given the cost of the filers and electricity for the fan a similar capacity ultrasonic humidifier is cheaper after about 8 months of use and you continue to save money every month thereafter. Like the ultrasonic these cool the air and as a result they are great in summer but most humidity problems around here are in the winter and they significantly up the cost of heating.

They're not the name brand nor the "stock" filters...but they work well enough for me.
They are not shielded in a thicker outer wrap which is what the more expensive "stock" filters are like, but that doesn't take away from the overall function of the filter. The thicker wrapped ones are nice only because they retain their shape in the humidifer unit easier. These knockoff ones work just as well. These have the same antimicrobial coating as the more expensive ones.
I took this down a star in rating because these filters only lasted about 1 month per filter, which I felt was short compared to others I've used.
I'll keep buying these, and I would recommend them to others who are looking for a cheap replacement filter.
