This is a long lasting synthetic plastic material as opposed to the disposable (and limited use) nature of the stock filters. I bought a couple of these types on ebay (for a similar price) (search for "HC-14 filter") and initially found that the plastic material didn't wick nearly as well as the stock disposable filters, BUT after the first season, and AFTER then cleaning the filter in a dilute vinegar solution, I found that the filter DOES wick just as well as the disposable filters. Apparently the (acidic) vinegar either etches the plastic material or removed a coating on it, leaving it much more (and properly) wickable.

It run a little smaller than the original one, but I stretch it a little bit and it finally fit. It stays on place and doesn't come off like the original one.
