By Alex C. Cullison
This review is for a filter element that goes inside of a humidifier.
Calling it a filter is a little misleading, as it really doesn't filter the air or the water. It really works as a tall supported sponge, to hold water within it and draw air through it. The air that is forced through the filter (which is essentially sitting in a tray of water) becomes saturated with the water, thus adding humidity to the air in your house.
This is an aftermarket filter, since Kenmore is the manufacturer of the humidifier.
There are a few minor distinctions between the "Sears" filter and this aftermarket filter, but nothing that would keep me from buying it. For example, the "Kenmore" brand filter has clips or tape strips to keep the filter in a circle shape, when it is in the humidifier. The presumption being that the soggy filter might slump over or something. No worries. The filter is reinforced with suitable materials to keep it from losing its shape.
Bottom line here, this filter does the job, is more readily available and is cheaper than the "name brand" that one might consider otherwise.

Do you know what "Legionnaires Disease" is? If you did everything wrong in the use of a humidifier, this could be the result. Ever leave a wet sponge in a sink for too long? It gets nasty. It can hold lots of bacteria and odor. Use a anti-bacterial additive to the water tank reservoir once a week. Also throw out (or replace if you live in Alaska) the filter at the end of the winter season. Clean your humidifier (with the filter removed) before storing it for the summer. Otherwise you will have a much bigger and nastier job come next winter!

By Dry in Denver
I have a Kenmore humidfier that I run all winter. My biggest gripe is the filter. Its wicking power only lasts about 2 weeks, then the top part starts to dry out and get hard and brittle. After that, I flip it, but a couple of days later, the top is hard and brittle again. It reduces the effectiveness of the humidfier. To get maximum effect, you would have to replace the filter as soon as this top part is dry, which is about at the 14 day point. This could become expensive...I wonder is there any other filter materiel we could use? I fill the tank every morning and every night...I never let the reservoir go dry.

By Searcher
I have been using these Sears humidifiers for years, first the smaller one, which I think they stopped selling, and now the larger one. I purchased the Best Air filters for my small one, and they did not last very long. That humidifier has also stopped working. It was impossible to clean or vacuum the inside of it.
For my present humidifier, I am using the Sears brand only. I am getting about a month's use from the Sears brand before I have to change it. I am using water from a carbon block undersink water filter since it makes my regular water a lot softer. This also prolongs the life of the filter and makes for easier cleaning of the water containing base. No hard water deposits.
The real Sears filter, by the way, contains anti-microbial chemicals so your water or the filter does not smell bad (no mold, mildew or bacteria building up - no legionnaires disease!). No odors from this humidifier like I got with the smaller one using Best Air filters.
I also have 6 pets and their fur gets sucked into the unit quite a bit, which I think also lessens the life of the filter. Even so, I am getting about 4 weeks use out of it.
I clean out the base first with water and dish detergent, then go over it again with Soft Scrub, and it's sparkling clean. I vacuum out the inside of the humidifier unit to remove dust and pet hair. With the new Sears replacement filter, it then operates like a new unit. I do not use any water additives or special humidifier cleaning products.
So, be careful when you order here -- I don't know if they are selling the ACTUAL Sears brand 32-14906 filters. I only gave this 3 stars because I have no idea what filter (Best Air or Sears) everyone is reviewing (or buying) here since the product name specifies Sears, but it is being sold by Best Air! Sears filters get 5 stars. Best Air gets a 3.
